Fault Finding
Electrical Fault Finding in Glasgow
Tripping issues and intermittent faults are the ones that waste money. Guesswork means replacing accessories one at a time and hoping. Testing means finding the actual cause and repairing it once.

Fault Finding — what it involves
We work a fault as a measurement problem: isolate, take insulation resistance and continuity readings circuit by circuit, split the circuit down, and narrow it until the readings point at one point in the installation.
It is a methodical process, and it is why a fault someone else has been chasing for weeks is often found in a couple of hours.
What we provide
- Systematic circuit-by-circuit testing and diagnosis
- Insulation resistance, continuity, loop impedance and RCD testing
- Earth leakage measurement with a clamp meter under live conditions
- Splitting circuits down to isolate the faulty section
- Cable tracing and locating buried and concealed cables
- Repair of damaged cable, accessories and terminations
- Making safe where a full repair needs a return visit
- Written record of readings, findings and the repair carried out
Why customers call us
Common faults we trace
RCD tripping at random
Accumulated earth leakage, or one circuit with a genuine fault.
A breaker that will not reset
A live-earth or live-neutral fault that is still present.
Dead sockets on one circuit
A broken ring or a failed connection in a back box.
Lights working intermittently
Loose connections at roses, switches or joints.
Faults after other trades
Screws and nails through cables are a common find after flooring, joinery or plumbing.
High earth leakage on an EICR
Needs tracing rather than accepting.
What you get
The difference it makes
Readings, not guesses
You get told what was measured and where the fault was, not just that it is fixed.
Cheaper than replacing parts
One diagnostic visit usually costs less than a run of swapped accessories.
Intermittent faults found
Leakage measurement under live load catches the faults that hide during dead testing.
Repaired properly
The cause is fixed rather than the symptom reset.

Questions
Fault Finding — your questions answered
How long does fault finding take?
Most faults are located within one to three hours. Intermittent faults can take longer because they have to be caught under load. We agree a time limit with you before starting.
Do you charge separately for finding and fixing?
The diagnostic time is charged at the agreed rate. Once we know what is wrong, you get a price for the repair before we do it.
Can you find a cable buried in a wall?
Yes — we use cable tracing equipment to locate concealed runs, which keeps the amount of wall we open to a minimum.
My RCD trips only sometimes. Can that be found?
Yes. Intermittent tripping is usually accumulated leakage across several circuits, measured with a clamp meter under live conditions rather than dead testing.
Is fault finding covered on an EICR?
An EICR identifies and codes issues but does not include tracing a fault to its source. Where a report returns an FI code, that is exactly what fault finding is for.
